The Global Day of Parents is an important occasion to reflect on the importance of being a parent and encouraging the development of children. It is also a day to draw attention to the difficulties faced by parents and the importance of services and support.
Date and subject
Global Day of Parents will be celebrated on Saturday, June 1. The day provides an opportunity for families and communities to come together and recognise the essential contribution parents make to society.
Importance
There are several reasons why Global Day of Parents is important. First and foremost, the day provides an opportunity to spread awareness about the importance of parenthood and the role parents play in influencing the development of their children. Additionally, the day promotes parental involvement in the upbringing of their children and the maintenance of a safe and nurturing environment for their development. Third, Global Day of Parents provides an opportunity to honor and commemorate the important societal role of parents and acknowledge their achievements.
History
The Economic and Social Council and the Commission for Social Development encouraged the Secretary-General to focus on family issues in 1983, which led to the creation of Global Day of Parents. The International Year of the Family was established in 1994, and the UN’s emphasis on family issues in the 1980s has led to the International Day of Families, celebrated each year on 15 May.
The United Nations declared June 1, 2012, as Global Day of Parents. Its first commemoration took place in 2013, marking a turning point in the global recognition of the role of parents.
