Golden Globe nominations today: Wicked, Emilia Perez likely to get nods; Bear, Shogun may also join in

A spectacular turnout of actors is expected when the nominations for the 82nd Golden Globes are announced on Monday evening (IST). Zendaya (Challengers), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Daniel Craig (Queer), Denzel Washington (Gladiator II), Ariana Grande (Wicked) and Selena Gomez (Emilia Perez) all have a strong chance of hearing their name called. Wicked and Emilia Perez are likely to get Golden Globe nominations.

The Globes, which are still on the rebound after years of scandal and organizational turmoil, could certainly use that star power to help stabilize the awards show. The nominations will be announced Monday by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut on the CBS News website, CBS’s YouTube channel and the CBS News mobile app at 8:15 a.m. EST (6:45 p.m. IST).

The 10 categories will be unveiled at 8:30 a.m. EST (7 p.m. IST), on CBS Mornings on CBS. The Globes themselves will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2025, with comedian Nikki Glaser hosting. CBS, which began airing the Globes on a new deal last year, will hope Glaser manages to outperform last year’s MC Joe Koy, whose tenure was widely criticized.

Here’s what to watch for in nominations on Monday:

How big will the wicked be?

Jon M Chu’s ‘Wicked’ takes off at the box office, earning crores of rupees. Although last year’s awards season was dominated by Oppenheimer and included Barbie, Wicked is looking like the most populist contender this year. Expect nominations for Ariana and Cynthia Erivo.

Will Donald Trump’s film The Apprentice be nominated?

It will be interesting to see if The Apprentice, starring Sebastian Stan as a young Donald Trump, garners any nominations. The film was unsuccessful with audiences (and with the President-elect), but praise for both Stan’s performance and Jeremy Strong’s role as Roy Cohn has been widespread.

Is anyone in the lead?

Because the Globes split the top awards between drama and musical/comedy, there isn’t always a clear picture of the top Oscar contenders. This is especially true this year, where no film has emerged as a favorite yet. In the mix are Conclave, Anora, Emilia Perez, The Brutalist and Wicked.

What’s new this year?

Last year, the Globes introduced two new categories that remain this year: cinematic and box office achievement awards and best performance in stand-up comedy on television. There has been a change this time in the Lifetime Achievement Awards. This year, they’re going to Ted Danson (for the Carol Burnett Award) and Viola Davis (for the Cecil B. DeMille Award). These will be handed out at a gala dinner on Friday, January 3, several days before the Globes.

How about TV categories?

A large number of nominations are expected for both The Bear and Only Murders in the Building. (Selena Only Murders and Emilia Perez could be nominated twice for both). Other series that may see strong performances include Shogun, Slow Horses, Hacks, and Baby Reindeer.

What’s the deal with the Golden Globes anyway?

The Globes are never drama-free, but things have settled down for the beleaguered awards body. Last year’s Globes was the first since the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and their acquisition by Dick Clark Productions and billionaire Todd Boehly’s private equity firm Eldridge Industries. However, earlier this fall, Uncler reported that former HFPA members had filed a letter with the California Attorney General’s office questioning “the legality of the purchase.”
