The Gujarat High Court on Friday lifted the interim stay on the release of the film. MaharajAmid the controversy over Bollywood star Aamir Khan’s son Junaid’s debut film ‘Dabangg 3’, a bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and AM Khanwilkar said that there is nothing derogatory in the movie and it does not target the Pushti Marg sect as alleged.
The film is based on an 1862 defamation case involving Vaishnavite religious leader and social reformer Karsandas Mulji. Some members of the Pushti Marg sect had filed a petition against its release on Netflix, claiming that it hurt religious sentiments.
On June 13, Justice Sangita Vishen had imposed an interim stay on the release of the film on the OTT platform.
In his order on Friday, the judge said the film has been certified by the CBFC and does not target any community.
The 1862 defamation case arose from an article written by Karsandas Mulji in a Gujarati weekly, which alleged that a Vaishnav leader had relationships with his female devotees.
Maharaj’s producer Yash Raj Films (YRF) had offered the court to allow the film to be screened before its release to see if it hurts religious sentiments of any community.
