HBO’s streaming platform Max on Monday released the first look at the much-anticipated second season of its post-apocalypse series. The Last of UsThe footage was part of a special preview teaser released by HBO ahead of the premiere. House of the Dragon Final episode of Season 2.
In addition to giving a glimpse of the show’s main characters, played by Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal, the teaser also gives a glimpse of the characters played by some new faces who are joining the cast, including Catherine O’Hara, Kaitlyn Dever, Jeffrey Wright, and Isabela Merced.
In the series, Dever will play Abby, a revenge-driven character; Wright will play Isaac, the formidable leader of the Washington Liberation Front; and Merced will play Dina, the new romantic interest of Ramsey’s character. O’Hara’s role is as yet undisclosed.
The Last of Us, adapted from the acclaimed video game franchise, follows the journey of Joel (Pascal) and Ellie (Ramsay) as they navigate a world ravaged by a fungal infection that turns humans into zombies. Season 2 is expected to pick up in a similar fashion to the first season, drawing on the narrative of the game’s sequel, and delving deeper into the repercussions of Joel’s decisions from the finale. Other returning cast members include Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Tommy’s wife, Maria. Additional cast members include Yvonne Mazino as Jesse, a community pillar with a complicated sense of duty; Danny Ramirez as Manny, a bright-tempered soldier who hides deep fears; Ariela Barer as Mel, a dedicated young doctor; Tati Gabrielle as Nora, a therapist haunted by her past; and Spencer Lord as Owen, a gentle soul in a warrior’s body.
Unlike its predecessor, Season 2 will feature seven episodes. Co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann previously explained, “The amount of story material we’ve got from Part II of the game is far more than what was in the first game, so we had to figure out from the beginning how to tell that story in a season.” The duo has assured fans that despite the season’s short length, each episode will feel “like a blockbuster in its own right,” with one episode being significantly longer.
The Last of Us Season 2, produced in association with Sony Pictures Television, will premiere in 2025.
