Dating in modern times is no easy task! Navigating the allure and pressures of finding love today can be a daunting experience for anyone looking for it, and that’s what has inspired singer-songwriter Kamakshi Khanna. She is all set to tour India with her latest EP, Heartbreak 2020.
Starting from Bengaluru (on August 23), Khanna will travel to Delhi, where she was born and has been a part of music choirs and backing vocals since the age of 13. Talking about her connection to Delhi, she recalls the time when she was a part of the city’s independent music scene. “When I turned 21-22, I really wanted to create my own sound, tell my story and put my experiences into music. That’s when it all started,” says Khanna. She adds that her current tour is not just a celebration of her recent achievements but also a tribute to her inner child, “My first EP was called Much Mellow. When I look back and think about its name, I find it a bit funny now (laughs)… I might sing some songs from that EP too because I want this tour to be priceless and I want to sing to my inner child – the one who started writing music.”
Khanna, who has shifted to Mumbai for the past four years, says that each song on her new EP is about “different kinds of heartbreak that we all experience.” Whether it’s awkward first dates, situations, or the endless mind games most of us play, the four songs feature a lot of it. “The first song, I blew it! It’s about awkward dates, the nervousness and the jitters you feel when you’re with someone you like.”
Dealing with modern-day dating challenges, and giving a lyrical appeal to her creative expression, Khanna says her other songs tourist And Love is not a funny game It will delight listeners not only in Bengaluru and Delhi but also in other cities like Jaipur, Mumbai, Goa, Kolkata, Shillong and Guwahati.”tourist The song is about chance relationships and circumstances that keep the hope of finding love alive, while the other song highlights how dating isn’t as simple as it used to be and leaves those looking for love today with confusing, mixed signals.”
Apart from these heartbreak songs, this tour is going to be a complete celebration. “So it will include some really big hits and some milestones like my song close by Got a lot of love during the pandemic lockdown, the song away which was shown as part of the web series The Fame GameAnd like you from the web series Kota FactoryKhanna said, “I just want to celebrate all the music I’ve written, the songs that people have loved, and really connect with people across the country!”
For Kamakshi, playing her songs live is the “best part of being a musician”, and so she can’t keep calm about going on stage, especially when it comes to her hometown. “Performing live is so much more spontaneous because you are in the moment, connecting with your audience in a more real way, unlike when you are recording in the studio, trying to get everything right. There is a different charm to performing live, which I think is the best part for me,” Khanna explains, “Since I am performing in Delhi with a 9-piece set-up with strings, horns and backing vocalists, I am really excited about the songs that include all of them.”
