Hilaria, who has been married to Alex since 2012, was at the courthouse for jury selection on Tuesday, July 9. She was there with two of her seven children. Alex also has a daughter from his previous marriage to Kim Basinger.
The incident took place on October 21, 2021. Hutchins was killed, and War Director Joel Souza was injured when a prop gun Alex was holding exploded. Alex said he did not pull the trigger and did not know the gun contained live cartridges. Alex has pleaded not guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter. If convicted, he could face up to 18 months in prison.
In April, War Armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter in May, a source told People Alex was “stressed out” and “understandably worried” about Reed’s sentencing. The source added, “He has a great legal team. I don’t think anyone is thinking about going to jail, but given Ms. Gutierrez Reed’s decision, it’s hard to know.”
In his opening statement Wednesday, Alex’s attorney, Alex Spiro, said Alex “committed no crime” and was following normal procedures for actors handling weapons on set. “Not a day goes by that we don’t wish Alex had saved his life. But witnesses will tell you that no actor in history has ever stopped a bullet from a prop gun. No actor in history has been able to do that,” Spiro told the jury. “No one could imagine or expect an actor to do that. So just remember that truth … justice is truth. This was an unspeakable tragedy.”
