Hindustani singer Radhika Joshi made a special tribute to this composer ‘Mai Ri’, whose story is associated with her mother and Guru – Dyne Mogubai Kurdkar. Radhika’s ‘Mai Ri’, which was in stories of Kishori Amonkar and Mogubai Kurdkar, was part of the special programming of Bangalore International Center for Women’s Day.
The story of this mother-daughter pair which changed irreversibly of how the raga would be sung and heard in a small village in Goa. Born in 1904 in Kurdi, Mogubai was quickly orphaned. Even as a child, who had to find his way in the world, she knew that her mother wanted to make her not only a song but also her life. After working as an actor in more than one theater company, there was no stranger for the Mogubai stage. He also trained in Kathak and Ghazal singing. When the theater stopped work, she fell ill and traveled with a relative from Sangli for treatment. There, his daily music Riyaz took the founder of Jaipur-Atuli Gharana Ustad Aladian Khan Saheb to his door, and he offered to teach him.

When Ustad Aladian Khan moved to Mumbai shortly after, Mogubai followed him. Radhika has described in ‘My Ri’ that it was a radical in those times, due to the difference in religious background.
