Organised by Mitra Mandal Bengaluru, the play featured just three actors depicting 2000 years of Marathi history. Using innovative audio-visual elements and stage props, Madhurav Written by Samira Gujar and directed by Madhura Velankar-Satam.
During the play, a book was shown to enhance the audience’s understanding of literary history and a quiz was conducted later. This unique concept was conceived by Madhura and the format of the play makes it suitable for performance in various venues, especially small venues.
The play invites local writers to share their work and emphasises the journey from traditional manuscript writing to modern-day blogging. Their work addresses contemporary issues of preserving cultural heritage and language in a globalised world, highlighting the importance of connecting future generations to their roots.
Sameera, who has an MA in Marathi and a PhD in Sanskrit Bhakti Shastra, aims to highlight the importance of regional languages in contemporary times. Apart from Madhura who is a full-time producer and director, Jui Bhagwat and Ashish Gade also acted in the play.

When asked about her inspiration for the play, Madhura said, “Although Marathi is an ancient language, its schools are closing down. If you want to make the next generation realise its importance, it has to be done in an entertaining way that reaches their hearts and minds.”
During a lecture, a professor mentioned Vishwa Shastri Chitravankar, who wrote the iconic Marathi work Essay series Samira was deeply moved by this. This revelation fueled her interest in researching the history and biography of authors and their works, a practice that is reflected in her play MatharamTogether with her friend Madhura, who is an M.A. in Marathi, Samira uncovered fascinating historical insights and contributions to Marathi, which inspired her to create the play. Challenging work
While crafting the script, Sameera had to collate extensive historical material into a coherent and engaging narrative. She credits inputs from Madhura and guidance from her teachers for helping her create a script that would appeal to both avid readers and general audiences.
The play acknowledges the contributions of countless writers and scholars over the years. By highlighting the richness and depth of Marathi culture, Madhurav It aims to inspire the audience to preserve their linguistic and literary traditions.
Their recent performance in Bengaluru was the 31st show of the play and Sameera says the audience expressed how it had sparked their interest in Marathi. “Since we have done a lot of shows in colleges and English medium schools, some children have started reading Marathi books or speaking a little bit,” says Madhura.

Sameera and her team have planned international tours, including possible performances in the UAE and the US, in the hope that this will inspire diaspora communities to preserve the Marathi language and culture.

Meanwhile, Madhura is working on an adaptation of the play, “This version of the play is fictional in parts, so we can promote it among the general public.”
She adds, “On my YouTube channel, titled ‘Incredible Marathi’, we present 10-minute videos on books, authors and other useful information, dubbed in English and Hindi, so that the next generation can also understand it and hopefully bring about some change.”
