How to deal with a friendship breakup?

No matter how difficult it may seem to get over a broken friendship, you must reflect on your feelings and free your heart from them. You can do this either by writing a journal or by talking to someone close to you for personal growth and deep self-analysis.

Here are a few things you should keep in mind while recovering your mental health after a breakup, shared by Amish Dhingra, mental health coach and founder of CocoWave International Coaching:

1. Control your emotions – It is completely normal to experience some negative emotions after breaking up with such a partner, whether it is anger, frustration, sadness or betrayal. Unresolved issues can become a huge trigger for your future relationships. So seek help from a close relative or friend or write down your thoughts in a diary.

2. Understand the situation – Of course, there is always a reason behind any breakup. So be mentally prepared to understand what went wrong. Find out the reason for the breakup which could be a long-standing emotional issue or some hurtful words that were said. Proper closure keeps your mental health better and does not come in the way of your future commitments.

3. Give it some time – Time is needed to improve any relationship as the emotions cool down with the passage of time. So do not take any decision in haste, rather give it a few days, weeks or months depending on the situation and things will get better automatically.

4. Find a listening ear – Finding a great nurturing ear can help you get over the stress of a broken friendship. You not only feel relaxed, but the release of emotions can also be comforting.

5. Embrace the present – Instead of clinging to the past and wishing for things to be normal again, it is futile. You must accept the situation and allow your mental health to move on from the emotions you are feeling because change is the essence of life. Healing will only come from welcoming change into your life and accepting the situation.

6. Look at the other side of the coin – Instead of taking your friendship breakup negatively, you can also look at a more positive outlook. Focus on the good memories of the relationship that used to be and cherish those moments in your heart forever and make them a permanent part of your life.

7. Exercise – Any kind of physical activity like yoga, Pilates, dance classes, gym etc. is a great way to release endorphins. Regular physical activity can reduce stress, anxiety, depression or sadness.
