I became their mother: Parvathy opens up about her transformative moment on the sets of Thangalan

New Delhi: In a recent roundtable interview with the cast and crew of ‘Thangalan’, actress Parvathy Thiruvothu shared in-depth details about her transformative experience of playing the role of Gangamma. During the second part of the interview, Parvathy spoke about how she connected with her character on a personal level, reshaping her understanding of motherhood through her role despite not having experienced motherhood.

Parvathy Thiruvothu explained, “I don’t think Gangamma became Gangamma when I asked Thangalan to play the role. I became his mother.” This moment proved to be a turning point in her portrayal, as she immersed herself in the maternal aspects of her character.

She elaborated on this incident, “One day, I was with my character’s youngest child. His real mother brought a milk bottle for him, but he started crying on seeing it, so I fed him.” This act of nurturing was a pivotal moment that deepened her understanding of the role of Gangamma.

Parvathy added, “Later, when Ranjith (director) and I were talking, he said, ‘This is Gangamma, his mother.’ After that, I never bothered him with any questions because I understood what character I was playing – she is a mother.”

Reflecting on this experience, she concluded, “And I don’t know what that means, because I’m not a mother and I don’t know what it’s like, so it was quite a big experience.”

Directed by Pa. Ranjith, ‘Thangalan’ starring Chiyaan Vikram and Malavika Mohanan is scheduled to release worldwide on August 15, 2024 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The music of the film is composed by GV Prakash Kumar.
