‘I won an Oscar, but now, who cares?’: AR Rahman no longer feels the need to prove himself

Composer AR Rahman has given many hit songs in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, English and other languages ​​since the 1990s. in one Interview With The Week, he says he is not just prioritizing projects that ‘bring him joy’. Rahman told the publication that ‘he no longer feels the need to prove himself’ and that he is choosing big budget films and non-film projects that ‘satisfy his creative instincts.’ He said, “I won an Oscar (jail, Slumdog Millionaire) long ago, but now, who cares? I am doing work that is close to me and will inspire future generations. It seems that the musician who once had the desire to differentiate himself has slowed down.

Rahman also revealed two things which always seem to bother him now. “With age, my tolerance has really gone down,” he said. Two things bother me: selfie requests with a timer and directors who distract me. They’d add crazy songs, and I’d ask myself: ‘Would I want to perform this on stage?’ If the answer is no, I reject it.”

Despite the slow pace, the composer composed music for Aayalan, Laal Salaam, Raayan in Tamil, Aadujeevitham in Malayalam and Maidaan, Amar Singh Chamkila in Hindi this year.

Rahman has many Tamil, Hindi and Telugu films under his belt. After the 2010 film Komaram Puli, he is making a comeback in Telugu with Buchi Babu Sana’s film opposite Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor. In Tamil, he is composing for Thug Life, Jinny, Kadhalika Neramillai, Moon Walk and Suriya’s next film with RJ Balaji.

In Hindi he has Chhaava, Lahore 1947, Tere Ishq Mein, Ramayan and Kamaal Aur Meena. Apart from Shekhar Kapur’s Ebony McQueen, he is also composing for Vijay Sethupathi, Aditi Rao Hydari’s silent film, Gandhi Talks.
