Imtiaz Ali defended Shah Rukh Khan’s National Award for Jawan: ‘Why not now?’

Mumbai: Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has appeared in support of superstar Shah Rukh Khan addressing his recent National Award for the film “Jawa”.

Speaking on the occasion of an incident in Mumbai, Imtiaz Ali told IANS that it was a proud moment. “No, no, if the country has honored him, it is clearly a big thing. I would like to congratulate Shah Rukh Khan and all those who have received this big prize. Thanks,” he said, giving his heartfelt greetings to all the recipients.

On 1 August, Shah Rukh Khan won his first national award for the best actor for his performance in the film “Jawa”. The dispute began when South actress Urvashi questioned the merit behind the SRK’s National Award win. While she accepted the honor for the Best Supporting Actress for “Ulozuku”, Urvashi indicated the lack of fairness in the jury’s decisions.

Without Shah Rukh’s direct name, he allegedly expressed concern over what the jawan made worthy of the recognition of the best actor, while the powerful performance of experienced Malayalam actor Vijayarghvan was not considered even in the main category. His comment provoked the online debate.

On the other hand, a class of NeTizance expressed surprise at Shah Rukh Khan’s National Award win for “Jawan”, questioning why it took 33 years for such respect. Many reported that some of his most prestigious performances – “Devdas,” “Sweds,” “Veer Zara” and “Chak de! India” – became without recognition. The actor’s victory argued about the time and criteria behind the jury’s decision.

Amid growing criticism around Shah Rukh Khan’s National Award win, experienced actor Mukesh Khanna stepped into to protect the actor. He told IANS, “Those who are saying that Shah Rukh Khan would not have received the award for this film (Jawan), but for the Swedes – remember that R Rahman had received an Oscar for ‘Jai Ho’, not Shah Rukha has worked hard for the last 40 years – so what is wrong if he has received a national award?”
