Riley (Kensington Tallman) is a well-adjusted girl thanks to her emotions, Joy (Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), Disgust (Liza Lapira) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) who keep her on an equal footing. They work tirelessly at head quarters (he he) to chase bad memories out of her mind, and plant good ones to strengthen her sense of self.

Director: Kelsey Mann

Story: With puberty, a new set of emotions struggle for control of Riley’s mind

Duration: 96 minutes

Riley is happy to spend time with her best friends Bree (Sumayya Nuriddin-Green) and Grace (Grace Lu), play ice hockey and go to boy band concerts. After a particularly good game, Coach Roberts (Yvette Nicole Brown) invites the three girls to hockey camp, which they know could be the first step into the high school hockey team, the Fire Hawks, where they will play alongside the very popular Val Ortiz (Lilimar).

Then Riley turns 13 and as the puberty alarm sounds, a slew of new emotions emerge. First comes the maintenance crew to make room for the “other people”. Led by orange Anxiety (Maya Hawke), the new emotions include Jealousy (Ayo Edebiri), Boredom (Adele Exarchopoulos) and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) – don’t we all remember them from our youth? Oh and there’s also beige, fuzzy old lady Nostalgia (June Squibb).

Riley’s mom (Diane Lane) and dad (Kyle MacLachlan) get to know the new Riley before she leaves for hockey camp, which is filled with dramatic ups and downs and tantrums. Her anxiety grows when she hears that Bree and Grace are going to a different school. Joy and Anxiety clash over Riley’s behavior at camp. Anxiety wants Riley to focus on using every trick in the book and imagining all the worst-case scenarios so she can get selected, while Joy wants Riley to enjoy herself.

Matters come to a head when old feelings recede to the back of Riley’s mind and new ones take over. Joy and the old feelings have to return and wrest control from Anxiety and his minions. When from inside to outside This movie, which came out in 2015, was a revelation. Director Pete Docter was inspired by the changes his daughter went through while growing up and created the Academy Award-winning movie.

inside out 2 In terms of psychological insight, emotional weight, imagination, thrills and pure spectacle this is a worthy sequel. It’s hard to pick out a single sequence from the glut of gorgeously crafted set pieces. Deep Dark Secret (Steve Purcell) is the story of an escape from a vault with the help of children’s television show characters Blufie (Ron Funches) and his sidekick Pouchie (James Austin Johnson) and video game hero Lance Slashblade (Yong Yi), on whom Riley had a childhood crush.

Brainstorm with a barrage of ideas, cross the head-chasm on broccoli or travel through the back of the mind on an avalanche of bad memories. The voice work and eye-popping animation is exceptional, it’s the breadth of imagination that blows the mind; the inner workings of a growing mind are captured in a brilliantly funny way.

It comes as no surprise that from inside to outside Psychologists and philosophers alike have praised it, and its second half is a meaningful, wonderful extension of that world. It’s kind of comforting to think that there are emotions in our headquarters working hard to bring out the best version of us whenever we feel overwhelmed or on the verge of a crisis.
