Maharaj released on Netflix on 21 June. The film received mixed reviews. In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee wrote, “Maharaj has picked up a real-life story that is certainly not devoid of intrinsic merit. More than 160 years ago, a journalist, inspired and encouraged by social reformer and political leader Dadabhai Naoroji, draws swords with a powerful religious leader of the Gujarati Vaishnav sect, who wields enormous power over the community and sexually exploits his female devotees.”
About Jaideep Ahlawat’s performance, Saibal Chatterjee wrote, “Jaideep Ahlawat leaves his mark on everything and everyone in the film, with an understated performance that exudes a cynical falsetto. He never raises his voice and maintains an almost blissful expression, broken only by wry smiles, crooked grins and omniscient smirks, all of which are traits of a man who thinks he’s a god and wants his people to turn a blind eye to his dark exploits.”
Jaideep Ahlawat grabbed everyone’s attention with his brilliant performance in the web series The underworld. He also worked in series like Bloody Brothers, The Broken News, Bard of BloodHe shared screen space with Kareena Kapoor in the Netflix original Don’t know.
