James Cameron shoots Avatar 3 with the upcoming film Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. The film will hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
The wait is finally over. The title of Avatar 3 has been revealed. On Friday, during the D23 Expo, director James Cameron and stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington revealed the first official title of the third Avatar film as Avatar: Fire and Ashes. Although James Cameron didn’t preview any footage, he did show off some concept art from the film, including Neytiri (Zoe) dancing on flames and riding a banshee.
“You’ll see a lot of Pandora that you’ve never seen before,” Cameron said. “It’s a crazy adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it also has higher emotional stakes than ever before,” Cameron said during the presentation. “We’re going into really challenging territory for all of the characters you know and love.”
Cameron has shot Fire and Ash alongside the 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water, which depicts a war between humanity and the Na’vi after the greedy Resource Development Administration (RDA) returns to the alien moon of Pandora.
By the end of The Way of Water, Jake Sully (Sam) and Neytiri’s (Zoe) family successfully fend off the RDA’s assault against the aquatic Metkeyna clan and the whale-like Tulkun, with whom they live in harmony. But their eldest son is killed in battle, and the RDA remains deeply entrenched on Pandora.
The story of Fire and Ash will begin shortly after those events, when Jake and Neytiri encounter the Ash People, a clan of Na’vi who Cameron has indicated are more inclined towards violence and power than other clans.
The film will hit theaters on December 19, 2025. Avatar (2009) holds the record for the highest-grossing film of all time. Its sequel, Avatar: Way of Water, will be released in December 2022.
Cameron has produced all of the Avatar films with his long-term creative partner Jon Landau, who died of cancer in July at age 63.
