DC Studios co-president James Gunn defended the delay of Batman 2, calling it a common practice in making sequels. The director has defended his choice by counting the differences between the sequels to hit films like Alien, Incredibles, Terminator, Avatar, Top Gun and others. Warner Bros. recently announced a new release date for Batman 2. After being delayed by a year from its original release date, the film will now be released in theaters worldwide on October 1, 2027, reports Deadline.
James justified the delay and wrote, “Frankly, a gap of 5 years or more between sequels is quite common.” “7 years between Aliens and Aliens. 14 years between The Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, Guardians Volume 2 and Volume 3 6 years between.”
Following the announcement, James confirmed that the move was writing-related, Deadline reports. He wrote, “Sure. Yes, it’s true. The only reason for the delay is not having a completed script (those of you who follow me here probably already know this). Matt is committed to making the best film possible Can’t, and no one can accurately predict how long it will take to write a script, it takes about two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.
Batman 2’s vacant release date has been taken over by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s untitled project with Tom Cruise. With the move to a day-and-date release plan on Max, Warner Bros. found tremendous success with the critically acclaimed 2022 Robert Pattinson film The Batman after the pandemic.
As reported by Deadline, the film grossed US$369.3 million domestically and US$772 million internationally. The film spawned a Max series, the third most watched HBO or Max premiere season worldwide, in the same universe as Colin Farrell’s The Penguin.
Warner Bros. has also made some additional changes to its upcoming release slate. It swapped the openings of Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey’s 17 and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.
Now, Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, will open on March 7, 2025, while Sinners, which reunites Ryan with Michael B. Jordan, will return on April 18, 2025.
