Working in the south film industry makes her feel closer to her late superstar mother Sridevi, says actress Janhvi Kapoor, who is all set to make her debut in Telugu cinema opposite Jr NTR Deora,
The actor will be starring in another Telugu film alongside Ram Charan which will be his 16th film.
Kapoor, known for Hindi films such as ‘Andaz Apna’, ‘Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera… beats, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil GirlAnd foundHe said that this is the right time to debut in South cinema.
“Somehow it makes me feel closer to my mother, being in that environment, as well as hearing and speaking that language. I felt it was the right time, I felt I was drawn to that.
“Mom has such a history with NTR sir and Ram Charan sir’s families, it’s an honour for me to be able to work with both of these extremely talented actors,” the actor, whose latest release is “Mr and Mrs Mahi”, told PTI.
Sridevi, who died in Dubai in 2018 at the age of 54, began her career as a child artiste in MA Thirumugham’s Tamil film “Thunaivan” (1969). The late actress was fluent in Tamil, but her mother tongue was Telugu.
The veteran star has worked with Charan’s father Chiranjeevi in films such as “Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka”, “Ranuuvu Veeran”, “SP Parashuram” and “Mosagadu”. He also co-starred with Telugu cinema veteran NT Rama Rao, Jr NTR’s grandfather, in several films such as “Vetagadu”, “Satyam Sivam” and “Anuraga Devatha”.
Sridevi also acted in movies like “Anuraga Devatha” and “Singham Navvindi”, which were produced by NTR Jr’s father Nandamuri Harikrishna.
Kapoor said she grew up watching South films and admired the onscreen “charisma” of the actors.
“I have always been a fan of their cinema. I like the conviction with which they make films and the charisma of the actors. It’s not that we don’t have charisma, (but) they have a different grace, the way they portray their heroes, romanticise their heroines. Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam cinema have a different flavour; they are all very different,” she said.
Referring to her producer father Boney Kapoor’s filmography, the actress said, “Dad has made a lot of remakes, so a big activity at home used to be watching Tamil and Telugu films. He had a passion for buying their rights. Watching these films has been a big part of my upbringing.”
Rajkummar Rao starrer “Mr and Mrs Mahi” released in theatres on May 31. Directed by Sharan Sharma and backed by Dharma Productions, the film has received mixed reviews.
