Jennifer Lopez is battling stereotypes

visible on Variety’s Awards Circuit PodcastJLo opened up about her early days in the film industry and how change in Hollywood — in regards to stereotypes and diversity — can be slow but still positive.

He said, “I’ve heard someone say that positive change is slow – and it is – but as long as we’re moving in the right direction, that’s all that matters.” Lots of roles for Latinas. I was auditioning for accent and stereotype parts. I kept thinking, ‘Why can’t I play the romantic lead?’ Why can’t I be the girl next door?’ That belief–that conviction that I belonged with them–that’s what helped me break those molds.”

The actress, who played roles in blockbuster films like Anaconda before making a name for herself in romantic comedies, said her journey was not full of roses. Due to her upbringing in the Bronx as the daughter of Puerto Rican parents, López admitted that she suffered from imposter syndrome in the early years of her career.

He added, “Impostor syndrome is real, especially when you come from a neighborhood like mine.” “But I’ve learned that it’s just what you tell yourself. You have to redirect that inner voice. Whenever doubts come to mind – ‘I don’t belong here, I’m not good enough’ – you need to replace them with, ‘No, I’ve worked hard. I belong here. It’s a mindset that changes everything.”
