Amid the growing sexual assault lawsuits against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, Joe Jonas recently avoided singing the disgraced rapper’s name on the Jonas Brothers show.
Joe Jonas quietly removed a reference to Sean “Diddy” Combs from his song Cake by the Ocean. The move comes amid rising sexual harassment allegations against the Fina Get Loose rapper. During the Jonas Brothers’ concert last week, the 35-year-old left out singing the disgraced music mogul’s name during a performance of his band DNCE’s 2015 hit.
Joe Jonas subtly removes Diddy reference from Cake by the Ocean
During the chorus, Jonas changes the lyrics “Come for me, baby/I’ll be a sister, you’ll be Naomi, wah-oh” to “Come for me, baby/I’ll watch you be Naomi.” According to BuzzFeed News, fans noticed the subtle change after a video of the pop singer performing at the LDLC Arena in Lyon, France, went viral on TikTok.
Fans immediately took to the comments section to praise the This Is Me singer for bringing about the change. However, many people commented that they had no idea that the song included a reference to “Didi”. “I didn’t even know Didi was mentioned in the song,” read one comment, which has garnered nearly 3 million likes.
The song’s original lyrics were a reference to Combs’ alleged relationship with supermodel Naomi Campbell in the early 2000s. However, Jonas is not the only singer to take such a step. In May, shortly after the first wave of sexual assault lawsuits against Combs, Kesha changed the lyrics of her popular song Tik Tok.
During his surprise appearance during Renée Rapp’s Coachella set, he changed the lyrics from “Wake up in the morning feel like P. Diddy” to “Wake up in the morning feel like P. Diddy.” While being interviewed by reporters at LAX on May 9, Kesha confirmed that the change was permanent.
“I stand by that,” the Die Young hitmaker said at the time, “I’m not the kind of person that shuts the fuck up. I know what I stand for. According to OK Magazine, I know That my integrity is pretty solid, so I speak the truth.” In her profanity-filled speech, Kesha said that if the music industry has a problem with her actions, it can “like my bullshit.”
