Keanu Reeves’ character in Sonic the Hedgehog 3
During the interview, Reeves also discussed his latest project, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where he voices the villain Shadow. While a fourth chapter is on the cards, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is already racking up holiday cheer, breaking records on its first Monday. Based on great word-of-mouth reviews, the film has delivered the second-highest opening weekend of the franchise, surpassing its predecessor, Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
A lifelong fan of the Sonic franchise, Fowler’s admiration for Shadow began during his early career, when he worked on a 2005 video game that revealed Sonic’s darker, more complex counterpart. In an interview with Variety, Fowler described Shadow as “the yin to Sonic’s yang”, a character shaped by hardship and a completely different path.
Recognizing these qualities, Fowler knew that Reeves, renowned for his portrayal of intense, layered roles such as John Wick, was the ideal choice to bring the Shadow to life in the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
According to Variety, “There are obvious parallels between John Wick and the Shadow,” Fowler admitted, adding, “Keanu has always played complex, thoughtful characters with a real edge. He was a perfect fit for the Shadow.”
