While promoting his new movie Modi, Three Days on the Wings of Madness, Johnny Depp opened up about the recent upheaval in his life.

Johnny Depp’s latest directorial venture, Three Days on the Wings of Madness, recently premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival. During a press conference, Depp spoke about the nearly three decades since his last feature film, 1997’s much-maligned The Brave, reports Variety. Johnny Depp returns to directing with Modi

The film focuses on 72 hours of turmoil in Paris during World War I, when protagonist Modigliani “struggles among bombs, policemen, girlfriends and critics in his search for a home for his art.”

Johnny Depp on his turbulent life

Asked to compare his own experiences to those of his film’s protagonist — bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani — Depp said they both struggled to find their identities. “Yeah, we can say I’ve been through a few things here and there, but I’m OK,” he said.

“I think we’ve all gone through a lot of things… maybe your story hasn’t been turned into a soap opera or aired on television, but we all experience and go through what we go through,” Depp said, referring to his recent legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard.

The project traces over 72 hectic hours in the life of bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani (Riccardo Scamarcio) as he travels through war-torn Paris and the country’s vibrant art scene in 1916. Hiding from the police after a confrontation in a bourgeois restaurant, Modi contemplates the possible end of his career and life in the City of Light. After consulting his art dealer and friend, Leopold Zborowski (Stephen Graham), Modi risks everything to meet American collector Maurice Gangnet (Al Pacino), the man who could transform him from a word-starved artist to a global megastar.

Johnny Depp on Directing

Depp said his recent directing experience was “much more positive” than that of directing The Brave, a film he also starred in and which was well received by critics and audiences when it was released a quarter of a century ago.
