Todd Phillips is skeptical about a third film in the Joker franchise.
After the release of the second film of the Joker franchise, Joker: Folie a Deux, director Todd Phillips has cast doubts on the third film. Phillips is also skeptical about making a sequel to the film Joker. Therefore, fans are worried about the low possibility of a third film.

Will Joker 3 come?
Speaking to Variety, Phillips admitted that he is ready to move on from playing the Joker, even though he will return to direct and co-write the sequel. He expressed little interest in making a third film in the Joker franchise. He said, “It was fun to play in this kind of sandbox for two movies. [B]But I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world,” as reported by IGN. Prior to the 2019 film’s release, Phillips intended to make Joker a standalone film. In 2019, he told Empire magazine that he pitched the film to WB executives with the suggestion to “start a new division called DC Black”.
However, the third season is expected as the director was not even sure about the sequel before the film was confirmed in 2022. Before the sequel was confirmed, the director repeatedly discussed the need for it. He also clarified in August 2019 that it would also depend on Joaquin Phoenix whether he is interested in reprising his roles or not. So, if the actor is interested in playing the DC character for the third time and the sequel scales success, then there could be a possibility of a third season.

Joker: About Folie a Doux
The sequel is set two years after the events of the first film and will pick up the story where Phoenix’s character Arthur Fleck aka Joker is admitted as a patient at Arkham State Hospital. The plot will focus on his relationship with Harleen “Leann” Quinzel/Harley Quinn who is a music therapist played by Lady Gaga. While the musical will not be a full-fledged musical, Phillips emphasized that music is an “essential element” of the film. Joker: Folie a Do will hit theaters on October 4, 2024.
