New Delhi: Nag Ashwin’s 3D film “Kalki 2898 AD” registered a record opening at the global box office, grossing Rs 191.5 crore on its first day of release, the makers said on Friday. Touted as a fusion of Hindu epic Mahabharata and science fiction, the big-budget film is produced by Vyjayanthi Movies and was released on Thursday in six languages: Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and English.
It stars Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan, along with Disha Patani, Shashwat Chatterjee and Shobhana.
Vyjayanthi Movies shared the film’s opening day figures through a poster on its official X page, revealing that “Kalki 2898 AD” earned Rs 191.5 crore in gross box office collection (GBOC).

The film’s opening day collection is the third-highest opening day collection for any Indian film. It is behind SS Rajamouli’s “RRR” (Rs 223 crore) and “Baahubali 2” (Rs 217 crore), which also starred Prabhas in the lead role.
On Thursday, trade pundits had predicted that the film could earn Rs 200 crore globally on its opening day. Earlier titled “Project K”, it is the most expensive feature film in the history of Indian cinema, estimated to cost Rs 600 crore.
Huge crowds were seen outside theatres in many cities including Hyderabad and Mumbai. And the initial reviews were also positive.
