Kangana Ranaut recently talked about Deepika Padukone’s role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historical drama ‘Padmaavat’. While promoting his directorial venture ‘Emergency’. Kangana said that she had turned down the character played by Deepika, calling it irrelevant.
Kangana Ranaut criticizes Deepika Padukone’s role in Padmavat
According to Kangana, throughout the film the character was mostly shown preparing for events, without much depth. She criticized that women in Bollywood are often assigned one-dimensional and stereotypical roles.
In an interview with Ajit Bharti, Kangana Ranaut said that Deepika Padukone was getting ready throughout the film.
“I was also offered Padmavat. So I asked him (director Sanjay Leela Bhansali), ‘Sir, it would be good if I get your script.’ He said, ‘I never give scripts.’ I said, ‘So sir, what is the role of the heroine?’ It is said, ‘The role of the heroine is only that he sees her in the mirror for the first time, and she keeps getting ready.’ (I was also offered Padmaavat. I asked him, ‘Sir, can I get the script of the film?’ He said, ‘I never give scripts.’ I asked, ‘Then what is the role of the heroine?’ He said , ‘The heroine’s role is just that – the hero sees her for the first time in the mirror when she is getting ready’), she said.

After this, Kangana told that after watching ‘Padmaavat’ she realized that Deepika Padukone’s role in the entire film was largely limited to getting ready.
“And when I saw the film, all that preparation is happening in the film. And he was right. She is just getting ready. Just getting ready. I don’t want to take names and focus on any particular person but I want to ask you, which director should I work with? (And when I watched the movie, she was just getting ready during the entire movie. And he was right. She was just getting ready. So, I don’t want to name names or point out specific individuals, but I would like to ask. Chahta Hoon Aap, which director should I work with?)” said the actor.
‘Padmaavat’ stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and Aditi Rao Hydari. The film is inspired by Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem of the same name.
