Karan Khosla: Jazz is going to have a big movement in India

Most people dream of avoiding corporate pieces – Karan Khosla did so. The exchange of the spreadsheet for sheet music, he turned his passion to a full career for Jazz. It has been quite a jump for Karan, which has a degree in physics with a concentration with a concentration in music, for a career transition in music. “Finance funded my music education,” he says on the phone, number one works in more than one way.

A global use

The album came together in an unconventional way. Karan conceived a contemporary jazz dress, but it was impractical to bring musicians together. Instead, he took advantage of technology, cooperated with musicians from all over the world – Argentina, Spain and Italy.

“I composed music on the guitar, wrote the sheet music, and sent them,” they say. “Everyone was excited to be a part of it, and we recorded everything online. People often say that Jazz should be recorded live, but we proved that a remote cooperation can simply sound as authentic. The project was an experiment to see if we could make jazz without high quality in the same room. And it worked.”

The recording faced unique challenges from a distance. Karan had earlier attempted similar projects, but he was not united. “The important feeling was that the system was clarified, allowing musicians to express themselves. I created a wide backing track with all equipment to guide them, while still giving them space to improve. This made all the differences.”

Despite the challenges of coordinating in time areas and ensuring stability in sound, the entire album came together in two months. “A lot of organizations are required to manage an online project, which is not my natural strength,” he believes. “But waiting for the perfect studio setup was never an option – this was the best way ahead.”

Indian perspective

Unlike many Jazz musicians in India, who mixes Jazz with Indian classical music, Karan chose a different route. “I wanted to respect the tradition of the classic Jazz instead of creating a fusion,” they explain. “My contribution as an Indian musician was not in changing the style, but in explaining it with authenticity and respect.”

Karan believes that Jazz is no longer in India. “There is a lot of curiosity about Jazz. We have students from cities like Raipur and Jhansi, who are eager to know how to include Jazz elements in their music. The modern sound of Bollywood and regional music has strong jazz effects, so more musicians are willing to understand its essence. Jazz is going to be a big movement in India.”

Karan co-established the Goa Jazz Academy five years ago. The academy focuses on making Jazz education accessible. “Jazz is not better than other forms of music, it is just different. What separates it emphasizes cooperation. In Jazz, your only exam is performing on stage with others. You don’t have to be right, you just have to play.”

From finance to music

Perhaps the most notable aspect of Karan’s story is his infection to become a jazz musician from a career in finance. “I always had a passion for music,” he reflects. “My job in finance allowed me to fund my music education. When I switched a career, there was never a single defined moment, it was a gradual process. I believe everyone has a passion that they can follow, whether full -time or with their profession.”

Although the deep knowledge of Karan’s physics and mathematics makes him a natural protector, he politely reduces his role as a guide in these areas. While he is open to interaction with the students, he believes that it has been many years because he actively performed mathematics or physics. Instead, he provides insight into career opportunities for physicists and mathematicians. Within his circles, he often questions academics and creative activities, especially between music torn. For those looking for pure mathematics, however, he jokingly, “This is the time to find a real physics man.”
