This struggle, known as the Kargil War, began in May 1999 when Pakistani intruders crossed the line of control and captured Indian positions with the aim of capturing National Highway 1A, an important artery connecting Srinagar to Leh.
On spotting the intruders, India later launched Operation Vijay. Operation cautiously showed the plan, mold determination and indomitable spirit of forces as the soldiers fought more than two months in the rigid area to take out each intruder and restored Indian control over each post.
