1. A long and healthy life for husband

Sargi ritual

This day begins before sunrise with sargi, a pre-dreaded food that was traditionally prepared by the mother-in-law for her daughter-in-law. This includes fruits, dried fruits, sweets and parathas which give women strength to inspect the nirjala fast (without water or food) throughout the day.

According to Hindu scriptures, this tradition withdraws Goddess Parvati, who started Sargi as a blessing for marital bliss.

Karva Chauth and Shankin Chaturthi

Interestingly, Karva Chauth matches with Shanti Chaturthi, which is a fast dedicated to Lord Ganesha. While Karva Chauth is mainly celebrated by married women in North India, devotees in Maharashtra and in the southern states worship Lord Ganesha’s Vakratunda form on this day.

Meaning of “Karva”

The word Karva or Karak refers to the pottery that offers Argha to the moon. It also holds cultural significance because it is donated to Brahmins or eligible women after rituals. The pot is a symbol of faith, prosperity and continuity of traditions.
