Katherine Laga’aia to star opposite Dwayne Johnson in Disney’s live-action film Moana. Johnson will reprise his role as the demigod Maui in the upcoming film.
“I’m really excited to take on this role because Moana is one of my favourite characters,” said Laga’aia, 17, of Sydney, Australia. Diversity. “My grandfather comes from Fa’ala, Palauli, Savai’i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tui, on the main island of Upolu, Samoa. I am honored to have the opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island people and represent young girls who look like me.”
The film’s cast will include New Zealand’s John Tui as Moana’s father Chief Tui, actor Frankie Adams as Moana’s mother Sina, and Rena Owen as Reverend Gramma Tala.

Moana It is scheduled to be released on July 10, 2026. Directed by Thomas Kail, the film is written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller.
