Kolkata: Demanding justice, leading artistes of the Bengal music industry on Monday protested against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Several artistes, including actor Saheb Chatterjee and radio personality Mir Afsar Ali, took to the streets on Monday evening to express their anger over the issue.

Speaking to ANI, actor-singer Saheb Chatterjee expressed his feelings.
He said, “Bring the culprits in front of everyone and give them such punishment that it will set an example that in future people will think twice before doing such an act. This is a very big issue. This is not just an issue of India or Kolkata but an international issue. We have come here to protest and demand justice. We want complete justice, we do not want half truth.”
Singer Soumyajeet said, “We have become very eager for justice and we want this system to change. We all should get justice. We artists are here today to protest and demand in our own way.”
Radio personality Mir Afsar Ali said, “People have forced us to come on the streets. We are all artistes here and we are associated with the creative field. We want to express our feelings after seeing such a case. We want to tell that we are also human beings. We cannot work when there is so much unrest around us. Whether someone takes action or not, I think it is our duty to raise our voice.”
On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, leading to a nationwide strike and protests by civil society and doctors in all states against the incident, demanding stringent punishment for the accused and protection for themselves. The Kolkata police arrested a civic volunteer in this connection the next day.
After expressing dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police, the Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation of the case. As the investigation of the case progresses, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has used advanced techniques like 3D laser mapping of the emergency ward where the crime took place. Additionally, the CBI has also conducted a psychological evaluation of the prime suspect.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India has also taken cognizance of the matter, a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will hear the case on August 20.
In Delhi, doctors of Maulana Azad Medical College and resident doctors of Northern Railway Central Hospital protested outside the Nirman Bhawan.
Similar protests were also held in Chandigarh, where doctors from PGIMER also protested. In Mumbai, a protest was organised at Azad Maidan by doctors and locals.
Doctors and medical students of King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh tied ‘Black Rakhi’ demanding justice in the Kolkata rape-murder case.
On 18 August, football fans protested near the Salt Lake Stadium, resulting in the cancellation of the Durand Cup match between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. In Kolkata, junior doctors and students continued their protest at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
