‘Kraven the Hunter’ tells villain’s origin story with gangsters and goons

LONDON (AP) — “Kraven the Hunter” won’t be your typical Marvel Comics adaptation, with an R rating that allowed filmmakers to include more gore and make it more like a gangster movie, its director says.

British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars in the original story, which shows how Kraven’s difficult relationship with his gangster father Nikolai Kravinoff, played by Oscar winner Russell Crowe, sets him on a dangerous path to becoming one of the most dangerous people in the world. But how does one take it? Were afraid of hunters.

Director Jesse Chandor told Reuters, “We structured it as a gangster movie… but it… uses this canon of Marvel characters that… brings another level of storytelling ”

“The superhero genre is structured around violence and… what the R rating has allowed us to do is be a little more honest about that violence… so in this movie, you’re going to see some blood. It’s a bit stylised, but it’s also more realistic, quite frankly.”

Taylor-Johnson trained to bulk up to play the massive Kraven, whose first lines in the film are in Russian.

“We were taking that Marvel comic book character, but taking him into a world that was based in reality and … focusing on his back story,” he told Reuters.

“I’m sure you feel sympathy for him, and yet he’s killing different people… My character doesn’t want to be anything like his father and ends up being very bad.”

The 34-year-old actor was previously cited by British media as a possible contender to play the suave spy James Bond.

When asked what it was like to play a villain, he said: “It’s definitely interesting when it comes with so many layers… there’s a darkness that he has to try to hide and come to terms with. Is.”

The film, which also stars Ariana DeBose and Fred Hechinger, opens in global cinemas on Wednesday.
