Singer Kumar Sanu spoke about being active in the industry for decades, but laments that composers are not making him sing enough songs for films

Kumar Sanu’s voice made the 90s even more special for all music lovers. He has been mesmerizing listeners for decades. And while the audience still remembers his old classics like Chura Ke Dil Mera, Do Dil Mil Rahe Hain, Chori Chori Jab Nazaren Mili and hundreds of others, currently they don’t get to hear him playback often.

The singer’s last feature film song was Dard Karaara in the 2015 film Dum Laga Ke Haisha. He also lent his voice for the recreation of Aankh Maare in Simmba in 2018.

Ask Shaanu why we don’t hear him more often in films, and he replies, “My journey has been great so far, everyone in the industry respects me. Par sabse bada baat hai ki log samman toh dete hai, pyaar dete hai, humara gaana bhi sun hai… I don’t know why they are not using my voice for more songs in Hindi films.”

When we asked him to elaborate, he said, “This question comes to mind. When they are showing so much love in front of me (why don’t they ask me to sing). I don’t know if it is true or not. Whatever it is, they definitely give respect.”

Sanu recently performed in several live shows in the US, which were sold out. Asserting that the voices of his generation are still loved by people, he says, “If we can sing, why don’t we sing? Why don’t they (producers) think about it? I am doing shows, I have fans. Wherever I go, I see that the tickets for the shows are sold out. There is public demand. I am also bringing another set of live shows in October and November this year. If the industry people understand, it is good, otherwise it is their misfortune.”
