For centuries, suspicion and belief have shared an uncomfortable relationship. Khalil Gibran once said: “Doubt is a pain that is very lonely to know that faith is his twin brother.” As the two continued the spar, the famous theater practitioner and actor, Sohaila Kapoor, playwright John Patrick bring the famous work of Shenley – Doubt: A parable – On the end of this week at Delhi Stage.
Post-Kennedy set at a Catholic school in the US, a strict nun on Sister A Alliusius, a father Flynn, a charismatic priest, a young male student, doubt about inappropriate behavior with Donald Muller, also the first black students of the school.
The first was staged in 2004, Shaneley not only won a Pulitzer and Tony, but was also nominated for an Academy Award, when he adapted the story on screen in 2009. This promoted the interests of stallvarts in different parts of the world, Roman Poolnsky directed it to the Paris platform. Last year, when it was revived for Broadway, Liv Shreeibar played part of the priest.

Sohela discovered it in her cinematic form and later realized its origin on stage. “I watched the film and stated what intensive performance has been taken by the author-sexual abuse, intolerance, and lack of certainty! Although it is set in the 1960s, it resonates with our world today. We do not allow ourselves to freedom of thought.
Concentrated about the copyright laws, she approached Shaneley and directed to the Creative Artist Agency, who represents the playwright. “They have given us a license to two demonstrations with the condition that we cannot change a word and cannot suit it to an Indian situation.”
Sohaila says that the world has changed. “Nothing is localized today. Small groups can no longer like a play quietly. Everything goes online and agencies keep a close watch on it.”
Although the play is set in the US, Sohaila feels, it does not matter because the issues addressed in the play are universal. “The country does not have many references. It is about personalities and what they stand for.” Apart from the fact that the agency would have opposed, Sohaila says, the risk of adopting it for any religion comes with a new set of problems.

The dialogues have a political layer which reflects India and today’s world. Sohaila has been touched the most, the way the drama “deal with the nature of doubt and gossip – creates a case where no one is. Through a confrontation between the priest and the nun, the drama combines the conservatism of religion with its more secular form, and the best part is that the author has left to decide it.” There is a deep conversation between another highlight nun and the student’s mother. Struggling to end, saving his son from a violent priest and providing him quality education, is more important than paying attention to Inaudhos. Sohaila says that the conversation provides an attractive insight into the opposite between privilege and poverty. “As the priest asks, do we ask bundles of humans or ideologies?”
The film version is remembered for his sterling performance by Meril Streep, Philip Seemor Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis. Writing demands mature actors and Sohaila has shown faith in Kavita Seth, Sanjeev Desai, Kritika Bhatia and Aarti Nair. “You have to live parts. I was looking for a combination of talent and dedication, which is difficult to find in Delhi these days.”
Also, Sohaila is working on a drama about her mother’s uncle, Dev Anand’s life and time, which will be staged on 26 September at Shimla’s prestigious Guity Theater, which will be to mark the birth anniversary of the actor.
