Miley Cyrus is accused of copying a popular song by Bruno Mars for her Grammy-winning hit “Flowers,” according to a new lawsuit. While a music rights-acquiring platform is coming down hard on the singer with huge claims, the Silk Sonic singer, who is a secondary subject of the lawsuit, is apparently out of the picture, as she is not listed as a plaintiff in the complaint.
Tempo Music Investments, a company that claims to own part of the copyright to Mars’ song — “When I Was Your Man” — has sued the former Disney superstar for copyright infringement. Legal documents reportedly point to numerous similarities between “Flowers” and Bruno’s 2011 track, accusing Cyrus of “intentionally copying” it.

According to TMZ, the inflammatory lawsuit against the Wrecking Ball hitmaker claims that Miley copied the melody, harmony and chorus of “When I Was Your Man”, and that without Bruno she wouldn’t have won her Grammy award earlier this year. Tempo Music also claims that Cyrus’ song mirrors the chord progression and lyrics of the decade-old top-charting timeless hit.
The agency alleges that “based on the number and combination of similarities between the two recordings, it is undeniable that ‘Flowers’ would not have existed without ‘When I Was Your Man.'” What is Tempo Music’s ultimate goal here? They want Miley to stop performing or distributing “Flowers” altogether, and are after her money after the unbeatable success of the “Endless Summer Vacation” album track.

It’s worth noting that when Miley’s song hit streaming platforms in 2023, dozens of fans took the opportunity to highlight thematic similarities between Miley and Bruno’s songs. Media outlets and netizens speculated that Cyrus had “flipped” the 2011 song in an attempt to reference her former romance with Liam Hemsworth.

He once reportedly dedicated the song “When I Was Your Man” to Miley, and then Miley released the song on his birthday, marking the beginning of a new era for him.
While Cyrus’ song is essentially a breakup anthem that empowers self-love, Bruno’s song, which was written more than a decade ago – at a time when he feared losing his girlfriend Jessica Caban – expresses regrets after a relationship. “Flowers” obviously samples Mars’ hit track, but the lyrics have been reworked, which seem to take a dig at his past boyfriends due to their alleged ties to “When I Was Your Man.”
