New Delhi: Zoharan Mamdani once again made headlines as he was sworn in as the 112th mayor of New York City on Thursday, promising to bring about a change in governance and usher in a “new politics”.
Mamdani took the oath at a decommissioned metro station beneath City Hall. He placed his hand on the Quran as he took the oath, marking a historic moment as the city’s first Muslim mayor.
His parents, renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani, were seen in the audience during the ceremony, cheering for their son and beaming with pride.

A clip of the swearing-in ceremony has since gone viral on social media, in which award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair is busy recording the special moment on her mobile phone. The heartwarming video has been shared widely online and is being hailed as one of the sweetest moments of the event.
The internet couldn’t help but draw parallels, calling Mira “like every desi mother” as she tried to capture her son giving a speech on camera.
Mamdani thanked his parents
During his swearing-in ceremony, Mamdani thanked his parents, who were present at the event along with his wife Rama Duvaji, for their unwavering support. He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his extended family in Uganda and India.
“Thank you to my parents, uncle and baba for raising me, for teaching me how to live in this world and for bringing me to this city. Thank you to my family from Kampala to Delhi. And thank you to my wife Rama for being my best friend and always helping me see the beauty in everyday moments,” he said during his nearly 25-minute long speech.

Who is Mira Nair?
Mira Nair is a renowned Indian-American filmmaker who has received two awards from the Cannes Film Festival and four awards from the Venice Film Festival. He has also earned nominations for two BAFTA Awards and two César Awards. His films have also received two Academy Award nominations.
He started his film career with Salaam Bombay! (1988), which earned nominations at the Academy Awards, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes for Best International Feature Film. His next project was the romantic drama Mississippi Masala (1991).
Nair is known for many other acclaimed works like Monsoon Wedding, Vanity Fair and The Namesake.
