LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Hollywood studio has announced it is developing a new “Hunger Games” movie based on author Suzanne Collins’ new novel.
Collins on Thursday announced the fifth book in the dystopian franchise. The novel, titled “Sunrise on the Reaping,” will be released next year.
Hours later, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Adam Fogelson revealed that the studio would develop a screen adaptation of the latest chapter, and set to release it in theaters on November 20, 2026.
Filmmaker Francis Lawrence, who has directed four films in the franchise, is expected to direct the new film as well. The project will be produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson’s Color Force banner.
The “Hunger Games” franchise, which explores themes of survival, oppression, rebellion and the consequences of power, began with Collins’ first book, “The Hunger Games,” followed by the sequels “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay.”
Lionsgate developed the film series in 2012 with “The Hunger Games” starring Jennifer Lawrence and its three sequels “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1”, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2”.
The story is set in the tumultuous country of Panem, which consists of the wealthy Capitol and 13 districts in varying states of poverty. Each year, children from the first 12 districts are selected via lottery to participate in a mandatory televised battle royale death match called The Hunger Games.
A prequel to the trilogy, titled “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”, was written by Collins in 2020 and Lionsgate is slated to release a film version in 2023 starring Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler.
“Sunrise on the Reaping” will return to the world of Panem, 24 years before the events of “The Hunger Games,” and will be based around the end of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.
