Lyricist-singer Swanand talks about losing gritty credits: It was the music label’s fault

Speaking to us exclusively, Swanand Kirkire clarified that it was actually not the digital music platform’s fault but the music label’s fault.

Lyricist-singer Swanand Kirkire recently called out Spotify on X for not giving him credit for his song from the Marathi film Deul. However, speaking to us exclusively, he clarified that it was not actually the digital music platform’s fault, but the music label’s. “It comes from the music label, Spotify picks it up, so they weren’t basically wrong. I didn’t call Spotify saying ‘Why don’t you credit me’. What I said was: ‘You need to investigate. One way to do it,” he tells us, adding that he was given due credit after raising concerns on social media.

“It was resolved, they gave credit within two hours,” he says, adding, “Talking in the public domain always helps and that’s what I did.” They fixed it. Called the music label to do this and they gave me details of their communication. They have now appointed a fact checking agency, so they are working in this direction.

The 52-year-old also credits the change to the Credit De Do Yaar movement, which started in 2020 when a group of lyricists wrote a song demanding that they be given proper credit: “Since we (lyricists) have A lot has changed since the move.” The ‘Credit Dedo Yaar’ online movement needs a proper system, someone should be held accountable,” he says.

He notes that the issue of missing credits in the industry is sometimes not even intentional. “Sometimes, these are just clerical mistakes,” says Kirkire, “that’s still a concern.” “It happens to all artists. There is no final solution, just that people should be respected. The approach should be, ‘If you’ve worked for me, I’ll give you credit.’ He signs.
