The month of Madras, music and Margi is almost inseparable. But do you know that Madras attracted musicians at the beginning of 18 yearsWan century?
By the 1700s, the city had established a center of music conservation and art, “Historian V. Shri Ram said in one of his talks.
Meanwhile, the city’s temples were hosting music and dance performance, and by the end of the 1800s, many musicians began to migrate to Madras. talking to HinduSri Ram says, 20Wan Century saw the entry of gramophone records and microphones in the Karnataka music scene.
In the 1950s, veteran musicians, such as DK Pattamal, ML Vasanthakumari, Ms. Subbulakshmi, Ariyakuri Ramanuj Iyangar, Semangudi Srinivas Year, Lalguri S. Jayaraman, TN Krishnan, and Umalapraman,
Carnatic music reached its peak in the 1990s. Sri Sri Ram says, “It was also a time when a furious NRIS started visiting the city continuously every December.
Nithishree Mahadevan says, today, Karnataka Music Ecosystem has gone through a maritime change. “From the 3.5-hour concert in the 50s, it has reduced to 1.5-hour concerts. Legends can be traced back like a raga. Andolica Or Malawi in great detail. But now, we cannot take that much time because the meditation period is shrinking, ”she says.
In addition, it is difficult to pull music lovers in the hall, she says. “When they can hear Karnataka music on YouTube, why would they enter the hall?”

Such problems began to arise in the late 2000s. The epidemic intensified it and brought a paradigm in change. “We are at a time when the artists are under pressure to give something new. Then they can draw the youth into the concert hall,” she says.
Technology also has its own good side: music is easily available, and people are motivated to learn it, Sri Sri Ram says.
Music composer Sikkil Gurcharan says that musicians are facing intense pressure on the list of performances and presentation styles. “The concept of being relevant is measured by a new section of the audience who see what trending and viral on social media. Some musicians also have digital managers who are doing well. While we can live with this trend and understand what is going on, we should only appreciate a live concert to attract those people.”
Carnatic music has never been as popular as film music, but stands as a niche art, and thrives amidst stringent competition. “The city has nurtured Karnataka music, and will continue to do so. If a musician wants to create an impression in the field and prove its subtle, Chennai can only create that magic. If you want to taste the taste of Karnataka music, you can go anywhere, yet you can’t come close to the experience, which Madras gives you,” said Mahadevan.
