Magh Bihu 2025: The harvest season is a time of joy and gratitude for farmers, marking the reward of months of dedication and hard work. In Assam, the festival ends with Magh Bihu, also known as Bhogali Bihu or Maghor Bihu, a festival rich in cultural significance, vibrant customs and community spirit. It reflects the agricultural roots of Assam, celebrating abundance and unity.

When is Bhogali Bihu 2025?

According to Drik Panchang, Magh Bihu will be celebrated Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Sankranti auspicious time Magh Bihu will start on January 14 at 9:03 am. According to the lunar calendar, the date of the festival varies every year.

History and significance of Magh Bihu

The roots of Bihu go back to 3500 BC when communities used to perform fire sacrifices to increase agricultural produce. The word ‘Bihu’ is made up of the words ‘Bishu’ (peace) and ‘Bhog’ (feast). The Dimasa Kacharis tribe is believed to be one of the earliest celebrants.

The agricultural significance of Magh Bihu lies in marking the conclusion of the harvest season and expressing gratitude for the successful harvest. Its social significance extends to promoting community bonding, friendship and brotherhood. Symbolizing renewal, the festival involves building temporary huts (belaghar), preparing traditional food, and lighting a ceremonial bonfire (meji).

Magh Bihu rituals and traditions

Magh Bihu is celebrated for two days:

– Day 1: Uruka (Bihu Eve)

On the eve of Magh Bihu, young men gather to build Bhelaghars, temporary shelters made of grass near fields or rivers. Meiji bonfires are prepared, and celebrations include singing Bihu songs, playing drums, and enjoying a community feast with friends and family.

– Day 2: Magh Bihu

On the main day, people wake up early to take bath and indulge in traditional games like buffalo fighting and pot breaking (Tekeli Bonga). Egg fighting is also popular. Sharing food is central to the celebration – families and neighbors exchange rice cakes and sweets such as sesame seeds, puffed rice and coconut laddus (laru) made from coconut.

The festival is a time to express gratitude to ancestors and agricultural deities, giving thanks for prosperity and abundance.

Magh Bihu brings warmth, happiness and unity as it honors the hard work of farmers and celebrates the abundant gifts of nature. It’s a beautiful reminder of gratitude, community, and the cyclical renewal of life.
