Manipur Theater personality Ratan Thiam passes

Ratan Thiam, a renowned theater personality of Manipur, died in the morning on the morning of Wednesday (July 23, 2025), one of the forearm of theater of roots movement in India. He was 77 years old.

Late Thiam was known for writing and staging globally which used ancient Indian dramatic traditions with modern themes. Manipuri art forms gave their plays like Chakravyuha And Ritusmram A specific taste.

In 1989, he honored Padma Shri, he served as the Vice President of Music Natak Academy before the five -year tenure as the President of the National School of Drama.

Former Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh was among the many leaders, who mourned one of the country’s major contemporary theater gurus.

“It is with deep sorrow that I express my heartfelt condolences on the passage of Sri Ratan Thiam, a true shiny and a respected son of Manipur, a true shiny of the Indian theater. His craft, his unwavering dedication to his vision, and his love for Manipuri culture not only enriched the world of theater, but also our great recognition.”

He said that Thiam’s work echoed the soul of Manipur to his stories, his struggles and its beauty. Manipur Bharatiya Janata Party President Adhikimam Sharda Devi also expressed condolences to the demise.

“A huge person in the world of theater, he was the only person from the region to carry out the prestigious position of the director at the National School of Drama. Many recipients of praise … Thiam will be remembered forever for art, culture and literature,” he wrote on X, he wrote, expressed his condolences to his mourning for knight family, friends, and artistic froratories.

Nagaland’s BJP leader Mamhonlumo Kickon said the late Thiam was India’s Eugen Eonco, and he “left behind a heritage, which is difficult to fill.”
