Matthew Spangler talks about his most famous adaptation, The Kite Runner

‘For you, it is over a thousand times.’ These words of Khalid Hosaini’s acclaimed novel the kite Runner Aamir, a privileged Pashtun, and his servant Hassan, became a symbol of friendship between a Hazara boy. The rise of the Taliban rule (dominating by Sunnis) in Afghanistan was set against the background, causing harassment of the Hazara population (Shia Muslim). Spangler is also a professor of performance studies at the San Jose State University in California, where he teaches courses on how refugees and refugees and other migrants are shown in plays.

Talking about the challenges of adopting an epic in a drama, Spangler says, “With this book, the challenge is the length, if you read it loudly, it takes about 15 hours, while the salary is just more than two hours. The theater plays an important role in cross-cultural understanding and sympathy, says spangler. “Amir comes from a very specific background, and life experiences; growing in Afghanistan and coming as a refugee in the United States, he comes from a Muslim culture; but he is not practicing as you can see from drama. As an adult he wants to do the right thing for the boy (Hasan’s son Sohrab). Finally, you understand him at a greater emotional level.”

Acting as his biggest inspiration by the Samuel Backet, Spangler says, “I have my PhD and my master’s degree in the Irish theater, and it has been a great impact on my work.”

The kite runner will be staged on May 4 at 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm at Ranga Shankara. Tickets are available on sites and online.
