London, Sep 29 (IANS) Actress-singer Maya Hawke says being the daughter of star parents Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke landed her the role in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood”.
The 25-year-old actress, who made her acting debut in “Ladyworld”, played Flowerchild in the 2019 film “Once Upon a Time…”, which also starred Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie and Al Pacino.
Tarantino has worked with Thurman in classic films such as “Pulp Fiction” and “Kill Bill: Volume 1” and “Kill Bill: Volume 2.”
Maya, best known for playing Robin in the Netflix series “Stranger Things”, said she was forced to live a life she didn’t deserve because of nepotism.
“I got made fun of a lot for this clip when I said on the red carpet that I auditioned. I never meant to say that I didn’t get the role because of nepotism – I think that was absolutely the case.
“‘Deserve’ is a complicated word. There are a lot of people who deserve to live this kind of life but don’t, but I feel like I’m comfortable doing it even though I don’t deserve it. And I know that me not doing it won’t help anybody,” she told The Times in an interview.
Maya said Tarantino intentionally included her in the cast, which also included Margaret Qualley and Rumer Willis. She added that he was trying to “cast a lot of young Hollywood.”
When she was starting out, the actor said she was “told to change her name, get nose surgery and go into open casting roles”. She starred alongside her mother in “The Kill Room” and was directed by her father in the drama “Wildcat”.
But Maya chose another path, he said.
He added, “It’s OK to be made fun of when you’re in rarified air. It’s a lucky place to be. My relationship with my parents is really honest and positive, and that’s far beyond anything anyone can say about it.”
The actress, who recently released her third album “Chaos Angel”, has also been a part of films like “Do Revenge” and “Fear Street 1”.
