Maya Rudolph wins 6th Emmy, Angela Bassett wins her first award at Creative Arts Emmys

Former and future “Saturday Night Live” star Rudolph is nominated for three more Emmys. Her voice-over work as the Hormone Monstress on the Netflix animated show “Big Mouth” has earned her four Emmy Awards.

“I’m really proud to be a part of this show,” she said. “It humanizes being a human.” She became emotional when she talked about the privilege of doing what she loves with her life. “It’s making me cry because I’m so menopausal,” Rudolph said.

He won the award at the first of two nights of the Creative Arts Emmys, which honor behind-the-scenes artistic and technical achievements in television and are a precursor to the main awards. Amy Celebration, Hosted by Dan and Eugene Levywhich airs on ABC on September 15th at 8pm EST.

Bassett came to collect her trophy for best narrator, a category that usually features stars but where winners, like Barack Obama last year, rarely show up.

“Oh my god, wow, my first Emmy,” an emotional Bassett said. “I couldn’t be more thrilled and grateful.” Bassett was attracted to the wildlife documentary project because it had an all female-led production team, which is rare in this medium, she said backstage. “It touched my heart,” she said. “So I said yes.” Bassett is a two-time Oscar nominee, winning an honorary Academy Award earlier this year.

Other winners include recently retired Pat Sajakwho won the award for best game show host for his final season of “Wheel of Fortune.” It was his fourth time winning the award, and first since 1998.

“Saturday Night Live” won six awards in craft categories, including prizes for makeup and production design.

Rudolph has won two Emmy Awards as a cast member on the show, and is nominated for two more Emmys for her work as host of the sketch institution last season. Those awards will be handed out Sunday.

Meanwhile, this was a great comeback for Shark Tank, as it was a category that Queer Eye has won in the last few years. Shark Tank previously won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Structured Reality Program four consecutive times from 2014-2017.

The Ron Howard-directed documentary “Jim Henson’s Idea Man” won four nods and “Welcome to Wrexham” won three awards, including best unstructured reality show. “Shark Tank” won best structured reality show. In an awards show crossover, the Oscars telecast won four Emmys, including best live variety special.

Dick Van DykeDick Van Dyke, who turns 99 next month, may have captured everyone’s attention when “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic” won the award for best pre-recorded variety special.

Van Dyke did a little dance and then announced, “This is sad.” As the winners’ names were being played offstage, he added, “I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to my memorial. I don’t have a date yet, but I’m not feeling too well.”

Van Dyke became the oldest person to receive a Daytime Emmy Award when he won in June for his performance on “Days of Our Lives.”

The highest nominees of the season, “Shogun,” There was a win of sorts on Saturday when the team that put together the feature’s post-show making won an Emmy. The FX series itself is up for 25 Emmys. Seventeen of those will be given out on Sunday, which focuses on scripted television.
