New Delhi: Actress Sharmin Segal made headlines by playing the role of Alamzeb in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film ‘Heera Mandi’. Based on the pre-independence era, this series richly portrays the lives and stories of the courtesans of the Heera Mandi district.
In a recent interview with Times of India, Sharmin spoke about preparing for her role.
Sehgal said, “When you work with Sanjay sir, you can’t prepare much because he presents every scene in a completely different way.” Talking about her preparation, she says, “It had Urdu, there was dance. I must have watched ‘Pakeezah’ 15-16 times. I had never seen a film like ‘Pakeezah’ before, and then I watched this. It took me a while to watch it all. Meena ji was one of my main inspirations! One of the looks she gives in ‘Pakeezah’, staring into the void. That’s what I tried to bring in the character of Alamzeb.”
After the grand success of ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, the makers have recently announced its second season on Netflix. The series marks the OTT debut of Indian auteur Sanjay Leela Bhansali and tells the story of Indian prostitutes during the freedom struggle.
It starred Aditi Rao Hydari, Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Sonakshi Sinha.
