The producers of the upcoming Menendez Brothers documentary are reacting to the new case update after working on the project for 4 years. Netflix recently announced the release of a documentary featuring Eric and Lyle Menendez, which will discuss the infamous double murder in 1996 that led to their life sentences.
The response follows the success of Netflix’s scripted series, Monsters: The Lyle and the Eric Menendez Story. Additionally, Kim Kardashian, who remains a vocal supporter of the brothers, reportedly visited them in prison and published a viral op-ed advocating for their freedom.
Menendez Brothers Case Update
On October 3, 2024, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said he was going to take another look at the Menendez brothers’ case. According to CBS, he pointed to two new things they are investigating ahead of next month’s court hearing.

The review follows a habeas corpus petition filed in 2023 and could open the possibility of a new trial, a lighter sentence or even his acquittal. Ultimately, it is the judge’s decision whether to overturn the brothers’ convictions. Gascón is also looking into new evidence that suggests the brothers were allegedly molested by their father, and Murphy may consider extending the season.
Menendez Brothers Documentarians Respond
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the case update, which could bring new changes to the documentary that has been in the works for nearly four years before its October release, Campfire Studios’ Ross Dinerstein and Rebecca Evans said they are excited about the new development. I am excited. Lyle and Eric’s interviews resulted in over 20 hours of audio interviews conducted from prison. The producers were asked if they had ever experienced “this kind of explosion in the news the week of a premiere.”

“I mean no, we haven’t,” Dinerstein said. “We’re excited for it to come out. I wish we could leave it today. We have worked on this for about four years. We are really proud of it. Many people have reached out to ask about when it will come out. And Netflix has already done such a good job promoting it on the service,” he told HR.
Evans said he expected viewers to draw their own conclusions based on the content of the documentary.
The question asked whether the producers expected any developments in the Menendez case with the premiere of the documentary. Rebecca Evans responded that she was unaware of any press conference or new information but was aware of the November hearing date. “The closure was filed in 2023, and so for us, when we were making the documentary, we felt like, we’re not here to prosecute a case. “We’re not here to present evidence with lawyers, or new evidence like that,” Evans said.
He clarified that the purpose of the documentary was not to prosecute the case or present new evidence, but to share his research on events as they unfolded historically, emphasizing that recent developments had informed his perspective on the past. Has not changed.
Kim Kardashian calls for freedom of Mendez brothers
The Kardashian star wrote an essay published by NBC this week advocating for the brothers’ freedom, writing, “It’s time to free the Menendez brothers.” The American Horror Story actress continued: “We are all products of our experiences. They shape who we were, who we are, and who we will be. Physically and psychologically, time changes us, and I suspect That anyone would claim to be the same person they were when they were 18,” she said.
In the article, she talked about the brothers’ situation, pointing to claims of sexual abuse, and asked those in charge to think again about sentencing the brothers to life imprisonment. She says the punishment was too harsh for what she did. “You think you know the story of Lyle and Eric Menendez. I certainly thought I did that.”
