Mesha Sankranti, also known as Maha Vishwa Sankranti, has marked the infection of the Sun in Aries (Mesha Rashi), showing the beginning of the solar New Year in many Indian states. In 2025, it falls on auspicious occasion Monday, 14 April.

Importance of Mesha Sankranti

Masha Sankranti has a deep importance in the Hindu tradition, which is a symbol of the new beginning and the journey of the Sun towards the Northern Hemisphere, known as Uttarayan. This day is observed with various regional customs and rituals, highlighting the cultural diversity of each India.

Regional function

Odisha: Paan is celebrated as Sankranti, it includes devotees taking holy baths in rivers like Ganga, Yamuna and Godavari. A special drink called ‘Pana’ is prepared and consumed.

Tamil Nadu: Known as Puthandu, the new year is observed if Sunranti occurs after sunrise, but before sunset; Otherwise, it is observed the next day.

Kerala: Referred to Vishu, the day is divided into five parts. If the solstice occurs within the first three, the new year begins that day; Otherwise, it begins the next day.

West Bengal: Naba is celebrated as Barsha or Pohela Boishkh, the new year begins the next day of Sunranti if it occurs between sunrise and midnight; If after midnight, it begins the next day.

Assam: Known as Bihu, it marks the Assamese New Year with traditional dances and feasts.

Punjab: Celebrated as Vaisakhi, it is important for both agriculture and historical reasons.

Rituals and ceremonies

  • Pooja and Puja: Devotees worship gods like Lord Shiva, Hanuman, Vishnu and Goddess Kali. Rituals during the virtuous period Muhurta are considered very auspicious.
  • Holy Bath: It is believed that taking a holy dip in holy rivers like Ganga, Yamuna and Godavari is believed to clean sins and bring blessings.
