ATHENS, Greece – Mimis Plasas, a beloved Greek composer whose music appeared in numerous films, television shows and theatrical productions and who provided the soundtrack to the lives of millions of Greeks, has died just a week before his 100th birthday.

His death was confirmed on Saturday by his wife, Laukila Carrer. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis paid tribute to Plessas, writing, “A leading musician, a great scholar and a kind man has left us.

Born in Athens on October 12, 1924, Plessas began his musical journey at an early age. He became a piano soloist on state radio before entering international piano competitions at the age of 20. His gift for composition will cement his legacy.

Plessas was a constant presence on Greek television, his gentle mannerisms and solo tunes endearing him to generations. Often sitting at the piano alongside famous Greek stars, he remained the center of musical moments and celebrations for decades, his music becoming intertwined with the cultural fabric of the country. His 1969 composition, “O Dromos”, remains one of the best-selling albums in Greek history.

He collaborated with a group of Greek music icons including Nana Mouskouri, Vicky Leandros, Giannis Poulopoulos, Marinella and songwriter Lefteris Papadopoulos to shape the Greek music landscape. His work defied genre, blending traditional Greek musical forms with jazz and classical elements, creating a signature sound that was easy on the ears – softer than the hard strumming of many of his contemporaries.

Mitsotakis said, “His ‘Road’ was rich, full of melodies starting from jazz and permeating Greek songs as well as Greek cinema.” “Mimis Places was unique, just like the moments he would always give us with his music.”

Plessas’ contributions extended beyond composition. He produced a popular radio quiz show, “In 30 Seconds”, and he served as a judge on several Greek and international music competition panels. He was also a member of prestigious artistic societies, including the Greek Society of Theatrical Authors and the Society of Greek Composers and Lyricists.

Plessas is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. Funeral arrangements were not immediately known.
