On Wednesday, Disney released the first trailer for Moana 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 animated hit. Ollie is returning as the voice of Moana, while Dwayne is once again voicing Maui.
Adventure at sea
While the trailer doesn’t reveal much about the plot, it does give a glimpse of all the fun and action that’s in store for the second chapter. It shows Moana setting out for another adventure across the ocean after learning of a calling from her ancestors to “sail new skies and reunite her people across the ocean.” It reunites Moana and Maui three years later for a new grand ocean voyage, joined by a crew of unexpected sailors.
The scenes feature stunning water animation, with Moana swimming past a whale shark.
The clip also shows Moana’s chicken Hihi and pig Pua. But this time Pua also appears to be joining Moana on the journey. This seems to be a deliberate move by the producers, as some fans questioned the decision to leave the pet behind in the original film.
At the end of the teaser, Maui triumphantly arrives on Moana’s boat, and asks her, “Why didn’t you bring a pig last time?”, referencing the plot of the first film.
About Moana 2
David G. Derrick Jr. is the writer and director of the animated film, which is set to be released in theaters on November 29. The project was originally developed as a television series before being retooled as a theatrical sequel. It features new songs from Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear. Ahead of the trailer’s release, Disney released the first official poster for Moana 2, which shows Maui holding a fish hook on the beach with Moana in the background.
Disney is also behind a live-action remake of Moana directed by director Thomas Kail. That film will star Dwayne and is set to be released on July 10, 2026.
