New Delhi: New Delhi, Malayalam film actor Mohanlal with actor and director Prithviraj Sukumaran during a press meeting for his upcoming film L2: Empuran in New Delhi on 25 March 2025.

Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the much awaited Mohanlal-Starrer of ‘L2: Empuran’ received a huge response in theaters on his early day, followed by controversy over its political content.

The film, the second part of the film ‘Luusifer’, has become a subject of warm debate on its criticism of right-wing politics and secret mention of the riots of Gujarat.

In the early day, the Sangh Parivar came out with criticism of criticism against the film on social media, while a part of the Congress and the left platforms persuaded the film to portray right wing politics as “villain”.

However, script writer Murali Gopi, who Sukumaran supports his ‘co-producer’, dismisses the controversy, saying that everyone has the right to interpret the film.

Gopi told PTI, “I will keep a total silence on the dispute. Let them fight it. Everyone has the right to explain the film.”

Gopi said that the film mentions the social and political atmosphere in the country and some people have expressed their views against it and others have accepted it. “Let them explain it. I will keep a mother,” he said.

Some right -wing media handle, including Sanatan Dharma, called the film “anti -Hindu”, saying that Prithviraj had cheated Mohanlal and his fans by making such a film.

Another right-wing forum, Hindu Post, claimed, “Imapuran has revealed itself as a Hindu-dominated promotional film, depicting the Hindu as a villain among the ongoing massacre of Hindus in the subcontinent including India.” However, the BJP State Unit, while a distance from the controversy, said that the audience can express his views after watching the film.

BJP state general secretary P Sudhir said that the party is not taking any campaign against the film.

He said, “The film will go on its way, and the party will do its work. The party will not be impressed by any film. The Sangh Parivar workers have the right to express their views and decide whether it is good or bad,” he told reporters here.

Rahul Mamkotathil, President of the Youth Congress, the President of Kerala State and MLA from Palakkad, who praised ‘Impuran’ as a Malayalam-speaking PAN-Indian film, said that the hatred campaign against Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Murali Gopi could not be accepted in any way.

He said in a Facebook post on Friday, “The same people who have advocated freedom of expression for films on the basis of baseless lies and religious hatred like ‘Kashmir Files’ and ‘Kerala Story’ have now come up against ‘Impuran’.”

Congress vice -president and former MLA VT Balaram said that he was amazed by the reception of the Malayalam film with a strong political content, in theaters.

In a post, the actor and son of the late CPI (M) State Secretary Kodiary Balakrishnan, Binesh Kodieri, praised the manufacturers of ‘L2: Emperan’, saying that they are worthy of bravely prize for “effort to reveal the current reality.”

However, some left-left media handle chose not to participate in the debate for “total negligence in the film about the presence of leftists”.

Sources said that ‘L2: Empuran’, which was released worldwide on Thursday, did 4,500 shows in 746 screens in Kerala.
