Mr. and Mrs. Mahi has been released in theaters. The film, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao in lead roles, is 2 hours 18 minutes long. The character of Rajkumar, who plays the role of a selfish husband in the film, is the most absurd. Also, Janhvi’s character has more decisive abilities. Playing the roles of Mahendra and Mahima aka Mahi, the actors tried to do justice to the roles but could not succeed due to poor writing and dull story.
Mr. and Mrs. Mahi is based on the fictional story of husband and wife and cricket. It is a romantic-sports-drama produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. However, there is neither enough romance nor much drama. Games, on the other hand, portray better to some extent. But only when it’s about what it takes to become a player, not what happens once you succeed.
the story
Like the trailer, the film begins with Mr. and Mrs. Mahi working hard to get selected in the Mahindra cricket team. After being turned down by his father for another year’s chance, the aspiring cricketer turns into a sad, depressed man working in a sports shop. But that is all until he meets Mahima aka Mahima, a positive practicing doctor who is floored by his honesty. Brought together through an arranged marriage, they soon discovered their shared love and passion for cricket. The husband then trains his wife to become a successful cricketer in order to gain some respect in her father’s eyes.
directing
Sharan Sharma, who last worked with Janhvi Kapoor in her directorial debut Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, is back after four years. Mr. and Mrs. Mahi have already made an OTT film, no doubt a big opportunity for the budding filmmaker as well. Being backed by Dharma Productions, Sharan had a lot to offer, but only if he made full use of it.
The weakest part of Mr. and Mrs. Mahi is its direction and writing. Neither Rajkumar Rao nor Janhvi Kapoor have a solid character. A loving husband suddenly becomes jealous of his wife. And within a five-minute conversation with his mother, he realizes where he was going wrong. Later we see him again as a companion and celebrating his wife’s success. If only Sharan had given Mahindra some depth, if only he had made things a little more organic, if only he had at least used Rajkumar’s full potential and not just wanted an actor to act. was
On the other hand, Sharan and Nikhil Mehrotra’s writing for Janhvi is even worse. A practicing doctor leaves him stressed but sets up a career because his partner asks him to. It really takes a day and a half for Mahima to realize that her real happiness lies in cricket and not in medicine.
Later, he needs a song to reawaken himself and the cricketer in Dhamak! He has been selected. Even more disappointing is that Mahima, who has loved cricket since childhood, faces a sudden downfall as she realizes that Mahendra’s support for her is more than just love. Then the suspense of guessing the last ball, some motivational words and a six!
music
Mr. and Mrs. Mahi’s music is also not that impressive. The film mainly has four main songs, two romantic, one sad song and one motivational track. ‘Agar Ho Tum’ is the only song that works for me. ‘Dekha Tenu’ is a good song, but if it was given more screen time in the film. On the other hand ‘Roa Jab Tu’ was the worst part of the movie. The song could easily have been played in the background when the actor was dealing with his heartbreak. Also, Manan Bharadwaj and Amit Trivedi had a great chance to create at least one memorable motivational song. Unfortunately, the music director could not take full advantage of this opportunity as ‘Junoon Hai’ was not effective at all. On the other hand ‘Tu Hai Toh’ seemed to be a good song, but if it is also included in the film.
acting
Rajkumar Rao’s choice for Mr. and Mrs. Mahi is also surprising. For an actor like him, whose filmography includes Omerta, Newton, Trapped and Srikanth, to do something like this is shocking. Full marks must be given to the National Award winning actor for bringing out every emotion of Mahendra on screen. But the incomplete writing made it hard to love the actor in Mr. and Mrs. Mahi.
On the other hand, Janhvi Kapoor is looking perfect as Mahima. The actress definitely deserves credit for her perseverance and learning cricket. His footwork to perfect the cover drive is a testament to the hard work Kapoor put into understanding cricket and its shots. However, no runs between the wickets, no single-doubles, virtually no fours and only sixes made his cricket very uncertain.
The supporting cast of Mr. and Mrs. Mahi mainly includes Poorendu Bhattacharya, Zarina Wahab, Yamini Das and Arijit Taneja. However, those who have really made their performances count are Kumud Mishra and Rajesh Sharma. Mishra perfectly portrays a no-nonsense and down-to-earth father that makes you hate his character and the same applies to Rajesh Sharma. I think good artists always leave their mark.
Watch the movie or not?
Mr. and Mrs. Mahi is a slow film, with a very predictable plot. Rajkumar played a ghostly girl opposite Janhvi in Roohi, but they had more chemistry in this film. There are some scenes in the film, which you feel that the characters are not consistent. Sharan Sharma’s second film might remind you of many daily soaps of Star Plus and Zee TV. With impressive music and nothing special, the film seems dull, boring and joyless. Although generous, Mr. and Mrs. Mahi unfortunately only deserve 2 stars.
