Navraj Hans: My father clearly told me that he would never launch me; one cannot become a star using the family name

Singer-actor Navraj Hans, son of legendary singer-politician Hans Raj Hans, has carved a niche for himself, but admits the journey so far has not been easy. “I am working a lot on independent music right now. I am in a position where I have the money to do it; I didn’t have that kind of money earlier,” says Navraj, who will soon release his own EP, adding, “Mere papa ne bol rakha tha main kabhi album ya music video ke paise nahi denge, khud karo, main kabhi launch nahin tuja. In the current scenario, independent artistes are bigger than playback singers.”

Navraj also revealed that he has stopped revealing anything about his upcoming Bollywood tracks. “My EP is coming very soon and there is also a song coming in the first week of July, called Wide Wheels. I cannot reveal any of my Bollywood songs because nothing is confirmed. We (singers) are called to Bombay to sing a song and there is a possibility that after me, about 6-7 singers will also sing the same song. So, you never know whose song or voice will be finalised,” he adds, “The producer, director and music director choose the voice they like. So we don’t say anything that my song is coming in this film. That is a process, I have no problem with it, I like to be in competition. When I was new in the industry, I used to tell everyone that my song is going to come in such and such a film and when it didn’t come, it used to be very sad.”

When asked how his journey has been, given the fact that he is also the son-in-law of singer Daler Mehndi, Navraj explains, “After struggling for over a decade, I started getting work four to five years ago. I value every penny I earn. When you leave home, you don’t start getting shows from day one. You first riyaaz, you go to music directors, then they give you time and then make you sing a scrap. I have sung some 400-500 scraps and then some songs have been finalised. Out of the songs I have sung, if 50 songs were finalised, four to five of them worked and that’s how I started getting work after that.”

The singer says that whatever work you get in the first year is only to prove yourself that you are a good live performer. “You start performing live and then a different kind of struggle begins to sustain it. It easily takes five years to fulfill your basic needs independently,” says the singer, who is famous for his songs. little pegs And Veere Di Wedding.

Navraj also spoke about the ongoing debate on the benefits of nepotism and clarified that it definitely did not work in his case. He said, “If there is someone in the family, it is easy that people will open the gate with great love, will even offer tea or maybe even arrange lunch, but you will get work only on the basis of your talent. There is no commendable work in the industry. No one can become a star using money or family name. Only hard work can take you ahead. It is not that I just have to sit on a chair in a factory and I will become an MD, I have to sing on the mic, my father did not know how to sing. However, he has taught me to sing on the mic, I am lucky in this case that I had such great maestros and I have learnt everything from them.”
